Principal’s Statement

Puberty Talk at AIS: Principal R. Browne announced that the school had received a complaint from the parents in grade 6 regarding the inappropriateness of the puberty talk media that was used in the class. He clarified that the school had looked into the complaint and understood the parents’ standpoint. The following resolutions were therefore arrived at to prevent a similar reaction in the future:
-          The school will have to see and approve all media that will be used to introduce puberty in AIS
-          The school will propose alternative media where possible, if necessary
-          Parents with children in the grades concerned would be informed ahead of time before the lessons in order to allow for a discussion at home too if necessary, that could also help to prepare the students.
Mr. Robert also added that the above-mentioned media is approved for Norwegian schools and therefore AIS had not found the need to strictly check and approve such media.
Parent membership in the school board: The principal announced that the school board had decided to extend membership to the parent community. They are looking for 2 candidates with a deputy who will be expected to start in their roles in the next school year. More information about the description of the positions and how to apply will be communicated as soon as it becomes available.

PC Meeting/Activity evaluation and preparation for next academic year: The next meeting will be the last for the academic year and it was agreed that some time will be spent to evaluate the last year’s activities and make propositions and suggestions for improvements for the next academic year. As many reps as possible are encouraged to attend.

Feedback: More updates from the winter committee regarding the funds raised is expected in the next meeting since they could not make it this time.

Announcements to the Parent Council/Community

-          A grade 5 student wants to do a clothes recycling drive in the school and hopes to get support from the parent body when the time comes.

-          Volunteers are needed to participate in the IB evaluation focus group, one per grade. Please send an email to your class rep if interested or for further information.

-          This is a reminder to ALL. Please show some sense and consideration for others and the children when driving in to and out of the parking lot especially during rush hours. Do not stop in the driving lanes to drop off. Follow the driving directions/traffic flow. Pull into available parking spots which could extend to Plantasjen.
-          The school calendar for 2018/19 and 2019/20 with scheduled holidays are available on the school website.
-          Ideas regarding more academic activities that could be organized by the PC are most welcome through class representatives.
-          Parents are encouraged to visit the AIS blog and join the AIS Parents Facebook group that also circulates information on events and more.
-          Meetings take place once a month, on the first Monday of every month at 4pm prompt, chaired by the Chair. Please send issues for discussions via your class reps.
-          The PC blog will be updated as usual by the Secretary with minutes and other important announcements/events

The meeting ended at approximately 17:00.

Test walk from Asker train station to the new AIS building and back - with a 9 year old

Dear parents and caregivers,  Google maps suggests that it takes19 minutes to talk from Asker station to the school. That seemed like a lot...
